Diversified technology company 3M is to sponsor a biennial global event which showcases the world’s outstanding young talent in a range of key vocational skills.
The 2011 event will take place at ExCeL London from October 5-8 and will involve more than 1000 competitors aged under 25 from more than 50 countries competing in 46 skills areas. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each category as well as medallions for excellence for competitors achieving international standard work. WorldSkills London 2011 will be the 41 WorldSkills competition and will be the third time it has been held in the UK.
The skills range from construction and IT to engineering and manufacturing, with the latter including auto body repair and car painting, areas where 3M is a leading player in both innovation and the diversity of consumable products it offers.
3M’s Automotive Aftermarket Division supplies a full range of abrasives, fillers, sealants, polishes, compounds, masking products and personal protective equipment (PPE) to bodyshops and mobile repairers across the UK.
3M has previously supported UK entrants in WorldSkills by providing welding shields and products for both training and competition purposes.
The company’s decision to become a Bronze sponsor of this year’s event reflects the diversity of 3M’s overall product portfolio which ranges from commercial graphics and industrial tapes and adhesives to construction products, as well as bodyshop consumables and PPE.
It also forms part of 3M’s wider commitment to supporting educational projects, which include 3M Streetwise, a road safety project for seven to 11 year olds, and 3M Worldlywise, which aims to help 11-16 year olds young people learn about sustainability and the environment as part of the maths, science and geography curriculum.
Carla O’Brien of 3M’s Automotive Aftermarket Division commented: “WorldSkills is a great way for the UK’s bodyshop technicians of the future to compete against the best of the rest from around the world and receive truly international recognition for their efforts. We are delighted to be sponsoring the event and would like to wish the very best of luck to all the participants.”
